Micro Fat Transfer

Fat that is distributed in the right areas of the face and body may help imrpove a prematurely ageing facial appearance. If you have facial wrinkles, sunken cheeks or dark under-eye circles, micro fat transfer may help fill and contour those areas of the face to reflect a more youthful facial contour. Fat is harvested from one area of the body (such as the abdomen or hips) using liposuction methods; it is then purified and injected into the face for volumisation and facial contouring.

Common Patient Problems

Wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyes and around the mouth can be softened or completely removed with micro fat transfer. Some patients have also experienced improvement to the actual texture of the skin, which is credited to the stem cells found in the transferred fat.

Dark Circles

Dark circles or hollows beneath the eyes can make you appear tired, old, or unhappy even when you are perfectly well-rested and content. Micro fat transfer fills this delicate, hollow area to restore a naturally youthful look.

Facial Hollows

Facial hollows can appear beneath the eyes or cheekbones as fat descends over time, leading to a much older appearance. With micro fat grafting, your own fat can fill these areas along with any surrounding wrinkles.

* Since the patient’s own fat is used, there is no risk of allergic reaction.

Areas of Correction

Nasolabial Folds

Nasolabial folds are the wrinkles that naturally form around the nose and mouth area when you smile. The deep wrinkles can become permanent even when your face is relaxed, which leads to an aged appearance.

Addressing Your Concerns

Recovery time for micro fat transfer will vary depending on the amount of fat harvested from the donor site. Typically, patients plan to abstain from routine activities for seven to ten days. Swelling will be apparent for about five days, and the final results will become apparent after approximately three months.

Scars from micro fat grafting are minimal and fade with time. There will be no scars on your face since the fat is administered through injections. However, the donor area will have a couple of very small scars through which the fat was harvested by liposuction.

The cost of micro fat grafting will depend on many factors and varies from patient to patient due to the flexibility of the procedure. It is not covered by insurance since it is cosmetic in nature. During your consultation, Dr McManamny will provide an accurate cost estimate.

Micro fat grafting can be performed under either general or local anaesthetic, which will cancel out any pain during surgery. Discomfort after surgery is minimal but can be managed with pain medication prescribed by Dr McManamny.

Frequently Asked Questions About Micro Fat Transfer

What is the micro fat transfer procedure process?

Fat is removed from an area of that body that has excess, such as the outer thighs, abdomen, or hips. That “donor area” is sculpted with liposuction into more desirable contours, and the removed fat is purified and prepared for re-injection into the face.

How effective is micro fat transfer?

The majority of patients experience reduced wrinkles and an overall more youthful appearance that can last for several years. However, the effectiveness of treatment is unpredictable and dependent on your body’s response. While your body will not reject your own fat, some of the injected fat can be metabolized and fail to “stick.” To arrive at the most optimal results, an additional procedure may be advised.

Is a hospital stay necessary for micro fat transfer?

A hospital stay is not required for micro fat transfer unless the procedure is being performed in conjunction with another procedure like a surgical facelift.

How does micro fat transfer compare to dermal fillers?

Injectable fillers can provide similar results to micro fat transfer, but they are not as permanent. Injectable fillers last from nine months to one a half years, while fat transfer can last many years. Compared to injectables, fat transfer also has the advantage of having no risk of allergic reaction.

How does micro fat transfer compare to a facelift?

A surgical facelift will erase wrinkles and sagging skin from the lower two-thirds of the face, but it does not add any youthful volume to correct the soft tissue and bone loss that occurs with ageing. Fat transfer redefines the contours of the face to add youthful volume to the cheeks, eyes, and temples, which provides a more natural-looking appearance than a facelift alone. Both procedures are often performed together for a completely rejuvenated appearance.

What are other uses for micro fat transfer?

Micro fat transfer is often used in reconstructive procedures to improve irregularities in body contour. It is also used to help disguise breast implants that are noticeable through the skin.

Are there any RISKS to having surgery?

Yes, any invasive procedure such as surgery DOES carry RISKS. Some patients will have higher risks than others. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner (a FRACS qualified Plastic Surgeon recognised by AHPRA). Please be sure you review ALL materials provided to you about your surgery risks and ask questions or voice any concerns BEFORE proceeding, and never have surgery to please someone else. It is also imperative you DO NOT SMOKE and that you follow your Surgeon's pre-op and post-op instructions including wearing any recommended post-op garments as advised. Please also be aware that surgery experiences, recovery time frames, results, incision line placement and scars can vary significantly from patient to patient. For a general overview, review the plastic surgery risks page.
